Martin Creed, Ceal Floyer and John Frankland
30 January - 8 March 1998
Exhibiting together for the first time, Martin Creed,
Ceal Floyer and John Frankland present a combination of architectural
interventions and site specific works as part of a single show.
The surface of John Frankland's domestic interior wall,
an expanse of stretched polyester, is literally skin deep. The features
of an ordinary room are replicated - a chimney breast, picture rail and
skirting board - although the expanse of the brightly coloured fabric
is as reminiscent of colourfield painting as it is of a domestic situation.
Some confirmation is offered in the form of a fire bucket, filled to the
brim with glossy red paint, installed alongside the genuine fire/safety
equipment in the exhibition space.
The title of Ceal Floyer's new video, 'Butterfly Effect',
refers to chaos theory, claiming that even the gentle flapping of a butterfly's
wings can cause an ever escalating chain of reactions. The video literally
portrays the flight of a white butterfly across the viewpoint of the came
ra. As the film repeats itself on a fifteen second loop, the viewer finds
that the only consequence is another butterfly fifteen seconds later.
Floyer's accompanying work, 'Monochrome Till Receipt - White', is a record
of a shopping trip during which the artist bought only white objects.
The receipt betrays this information in the everyday language of
the supermarket.
Martin Creed has installed two electrical devices in
the technician's workshop at the far end of the exhibition space. A mechanism
automatically opens and cl
oses the door leading to the workshop, whilst a light switch timer prompts
the fluorescent light inside to flicker on and off at intervals. The room,
usually unnoticed by visitors, seems to have been invaded by a strange
force as it takes on a life of its own.
