This is the first London exhibition for Ernst Logar
a young Austrian artist living in Vienna. Logar was the winner of Kunsthalle
Wien prize 2004, collaboration between Kunsthalle Wien, Delfina Studio
Trust and Universität für Angewandte Kunst Wien. As part of
the prize Logar was awarded a residency in London during summer 2005.
Non Public Spaces is a series of photographs,
videos and documentation of places not normally open to the public. They
are chosen for their special political, economic or social significance,
such as mortuaries of forensic medicine, central computer rooms where
population related data are registered and processed, police arsenals,
strong rooms which store state assets, depots of public art collections,
news studios and other significant places. They are all instruments of
power in a state and global context. The show will include works where
Logar was granted permission to enter closed spaces in Vienna, Paris and
New York. More recent works are concerned with accessing media news rooms
in London.
Non Public Spaces is about the artist’s
continual effort to penetrate these places and the confrontation of the
individual with the apparatus of power and its institutions. Through diverse
strategies and elaborate bureaucratic authorisation procedures, he attempt
to reach and document these places.
