Summer Camp
Every now and then, there is an exhibition that sums
up a certain mood or reflects the concerns of a certain emerging generation
of artists. New York Projects at Delfina Project Space looks set to become
one such exhibition. Featuring the work of 14 artists, all currently living
and working in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Willemsburg, this exhibition offers
up some of the best young artists from New York. Delfina has invited them
all to spend the summer living and working in Bermondsey Street, and many
of the artists will produce new works specifically for the space. Featuring,
among others, Lucky DeBellevue, Rachel Harrison, Jonathan Horowitz and
Rob Pruitt, the exhibition offers an insight into the practices
of a group of young artists who will live, work and exhibit together for
the first time-kind of like an art world version of Big Brother. Selected
by artist Luke Dowd, who will also feature in the show, the exhibition
features the works of artists who are already some of the hottest among
their contemporaries in New York. Look out for Ricci Albenda, who in the
past has warped gallery walls and is known for an ongoing series of works
in which he creates both negative and positive "portals" which
fit neatly into the surface of wall space. Also Robb Pruitt, who recently
exhibited a large selection of ideas from his book 101 Art Ideas You Can
Do Yourself. This show includes realisations of ideas like 'paint
yourself into your favourite cartoon'. Other artists such as Lucky
De Bellevue makes complex sculptures from pipe cleaners, whist Rachel
Harrison's work often involves found and constructed objects twinned
with photographs. There isn't one single thing that can link these
artists together, other than being in a certain role at a certain time.
This show should be pretty excellent because of it.
